Teaching English in Korea

We recently placed Oliver, a teacher from the UK, in Korea. We asked him these 5 questions and this is what he has to say!
1) Why did you want to teach English in Korea?
I wanted to experience a different way of life for a few years while I was still young. I wanted to travel and see different places and also not have the same boring day at work everyday!
2) What did you like the best about teaching in Korea?
There are so many great things that it is hard to choose. I would say that the students are, generally speaking, a please to teach – extremely hard-working and clever but also polite and respectful.
3) What surprised you the most about living in Korea?
The most surprising thing is probably the students again. I can’t imagine students in England being so friendly to you as soon as you walk in the school, without teaching. They all say “hello teacher” when you walk past, meaning you end up saying “hello” back about a thousand times a day!!
4) What did you like the best about living in Korea?
The best thing is Korea its self. The countryside is beautiful, weather is good, the food is cheap but some of the best I have ever had and the people are incredibly helpful.
5) What advice do you have for teachers following in your footsteps?
I would say that you should stay calm during the application process, choose your school carefully and if possible, look to find a position for February or August at the start of the semesters, as this is when there are a lot of positions available!
