Criminal record check – Korea

policeWhere do you get your criminal record check?

Just order it from your local police station.

How long does it take to get your criminal record check back?

It can take up to a few weeks.

After you receive it, you will either have to get it apostillized or notarized at the Korean embassy (depending on which country you are from).

Most schools prefer to hire candidates who do not have criminal records.

Depending on what you are convicted of, you may not even be able to work in Korea.

Drug test in Korea

saynotodrugsYou will receive a health check when you get to Korea.

It will be paid for by your employer.

The health test includes a drug test.

There are many ways they test for drug use such as hair, urine and blood tests.

If you fail the drug test, you can be deported from Korea.

In March, the marjauna test has been dropped from the drug test but I would still advise against using it.

Drug laws are very strict in Korea.

If you are caught with drugs, you can end up in a lot of trouble.

Underground shopping in Korea

undergroundshopping

Like shopping?

Why not try shopping underground?

In Korea, there are many underground malls.

When underground, you will see many independent sellers trying to selling different products from their stalls.

They may even try to talk you into buying one of their products.

They sell just about everything from mobile phones to make up.

You can find these underground malls in Seoul, Busan and other cities.

You should definately experience shopping underground.

Sometimes you can find a real bargain!

Public baths in Korea

scrubbersIn Korea, they have public baths.

What are they?

They are a place where Koreans go to scrub.

Scrub?

Yes!

They use these cloths in the photo to exfoliate their skin.

The cloths come in different scrub strengths.

The yellow and green ones are regular scrub power while the red ones are for sensitive skin.

These cloths are made from an abrasive material.

If you don’t have one and want one, you can buy one at the public baths. They are only 1,500 won each ($1.50US.)

When you get to the public baths, you will pay an entrance fee at the counter.

It costs 3,500 won ($3US) to go to the public baths for a day.

Most people bring their own soap and shampoo. If you forget, not to worry because you can buy them inside.

After you pay fee, you will be handed a towel. Then you will enter the change rooms. You can put your belongings in a locker.

Then look for a steamy door!

Just to let you know, no one wears any clothes at the public baths. If you are shy, this is not the place for you!

At the public baths, there are baths, showers and saunas.

The baths are large and have different temperatures of water in them.

Some baths are boiling hot while others are freezing cold.

The baths are big enough for about 10-15 people in each one.

It is best to soak in a hot bath and then when you get out, scrub your skin with one of the Korean cloths. You will have to apply a lot of pressure and your skin will turn red but after it will be shiny and soft.

The baths are not co-ed. There are seperate baths for men and women.

It is fun to sit in the hot bath and then jump in the cold one.

Some public baths even have a hair dressors inside so you can get your hair done at the same time.

You can get a massage at the public baths but it is not a relaxing massage that most western people are used to. Korean massages can be quite painful! If you think you can handle it, give it a try! It costs 13,000 won and lasts around 40 minutes. First they scrub your body all over. Second they give you a face pack. Third they give you a massage and lastly they give you a foaming body wash.

The public baths can often be noisy and crowded. If you are looking for a relaxing spa experience, go to any 5 star hotel closest to you and use their public baths. The cost is 15,000 won ($15.00US) each time you go and remember you can stay there for the whole day if you choose!

Getting a Korean driver’s license

koreandriverslicenseHow do you get a Korean driver’s license?

Easy!

If you already have a driver’s license from your own country just take it to a
driver’s licensing office.

You will need to bring your driver’s licence, 4 passport sized photos and your
passport with you.

You will probably have to do an eye examine. Just a warning when they do the eye exame, they will ask you to read the smallest line first (isn’t of the largest) so don’t be surprised if you can’t read the first few lines.

It will take about a week for your license to be processed.

The cost is only 5,000won ($5.00US).

Some people get international licenses but they only last for a year.

Korean licenses are valid for 7 years so if you plan on staying in Korea for a while, it is a good idea to get one.

If this is your first time getting a driver’s license, you will have to do an examination.

You should still bring all the same documents with you.

The fee for getting the license is only 7,000won ($7.00).

To apply, you will have to had lived in Korea for at least 6 months.
